Mark Selby etched his name further into BetVictor Championship League Snooker Invitational history, claiming a remarkable third consecutive title with a commanding 3-1 victory over Wu Yize at Leicester’s Mattioli Arena.
Selby reflected on the achievement: “Three years running. Incredible really. It’s such a tough tournament to win a group never mind winning it outright. So I’m really happy I’ve played in this event. Confidence is everything in this sport. Winning the Champion of Champions last year it gave me the confidence going forward and I’ve seem to have built on that, going into the UK Championship and now to win this title again. I’ve felt like I’ve been playing really well. I feel like I’m in a good space on the table and hope that continues.”
Competing once again on home soil, the ‘Jester from Leicester’ delivered another trademark display of composure and clinical break-building to complete an unprecedented hat-trick of titles in front of his hometown crowd.
Selby fired runs of 70, 128 and 92 in the final to see off the challenge of Wu, rarely allowing his opponent an opportunity as he wrapped up yet another successful title defence in style.
The four-time World Champion had earlier whitewashed Si Jiahui in the semi-finals of the Winners’ Group to book his place in the decider, continuing the relentless form that has made him the man to beat in this competition.
His route to Finals Day was equally impressive. Selby secured qualification through Group Five, defeating reigning World Champion Zhao Xintong 3-1 in the group final to punch his ticket to his third Winners’ Group and set the tone for another deep run.
The victory further underlines Selby’s dominance at the Mattioli Arena and continues a superb run of form that has seen him thrive over the past 4 months.
He will return to Leicester later this year as defending champion at the prestigious Champion of Champions, running from 9–15 November, where he’ll be joined by World No.1 Judd Trump, Zhao Xintong, Kyren Wilson and Wu Yize in what promise to be a star-studded field.
