Judd Trump battled back from two-frames down in Table One’s final match of the day, with a 2-2 draw against Xu Si being enough to reach Winners’ Week at the BetVictor Championship League Snooker – Ranking Edition at the Morningside Arena, Leicester live on Viaplay Xtra in the UK, and broadcasters worldwide including Viaplay in Scandinavia, the Baltics, Poland, and the Netherlands and Table 2 live on Matchroom.Live globally.
Masters winner Trump was drawn into an interesting Group 2, featuring Si, Reanne Evans and Jimmy White – returning for his 44th season as a professional. 3-0 wins over Evans and White had the Ace in the Pack in pole position for qualification heading into the evening session. Closing play on Table One, he sealed his place in Winners’ Week, beginning on 17th July, with an epic fightback over the Chinese star.
Si sat on four points, two behind Trump, following an opening win over White and a two-all finish with Evans. The Chinese potter left nerves jangling for the former World No.1 after running out with the first two frames, meaning Trump had to secure a point to advance.
Taking the third with a 904th career century, Trump had the opportunity to clear up before a horror-blunder when clearing up in the fourth. A routine-red mishit brought Si back to the table, but the Bristolian shooter was able to see it home and secure passage to a second-weeks play.
Si and Evans finished second and third respectively on four points – the Chinese potter ahead by virtue of frames lost. It was a day to forget for veteran star White, whose only frame won came in a 3-1 defeat to the 12-time women’s champion.
Joe Perry’s break of 128 – the highest of the day – helped the Gentleman over the line against Jamie Clarke, in a contest that would have seen either victor advance to next week’s advanced stages. Perry came into Table Two’s final match-up on the back of a win and a draw, against Andy Lee and Stuart Carrington respectively. Clarke sat atop of Group 18 after beating both men, but ultimately lost out to Perry.
Stuart Carrington’s victory over Andy Lee was enough for a third-placed finish, with Lee propping up the group after defeats in all three fixtures.
