Matt Selt Clinches Winners’ Group Spot with Dominant Group Five Victory Over Judd Trump at BetVictor Championship League Invitational

Invitational January 21st, 2025

Matt Selt delivered an exceptional performance in the Group Five final, defeating World Number One Judd Trump in a commanding 3-0 whitewash at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester to claim his place in the Winners’ Group of the 2025 BetVictor Championship League Snooker Invitational.

Despite leading the Group Five standings with the most match wins, Trump fell short in the final, where Selt capitalised on a series of uncharacteristic errors to sweep the frames and secure a decisive victory.

Selt’s momentum was evident in the play-offs, where he overcame Jak Jones with a solid 3-1 victory. Jones appeared poised for a comeback but missed a critical red in the final frame, allowing Selt to close out the match.

Though Jak Jones once again fell short of Winners’ Group qualification, he etched his name into the record books by achieving the most centuries in a professional tournament. He broke the previous record, held by Selt, during the group stage with his 24th century and extended his tally to 26, setting a historic milestone.

Joe O’Connor impressed with the highest break of the group, a 138, but his campaign ended in a narrow 3-2 play-off loss to Trump in a tightly contested match.

Stuart Bingham’s hopes were dashed after a crucial loss to Neil Robertson, which allowed Tom Ford to secure the fifth spot in the group and progress to Group Six. Robertson and Bingham both exited the tournament after finishing at the bottom of the standings with the fewest match wins.

Trump, Jones, O’Connor, and Ford advance to Group Six, where they will join David Gilbert, Jack Lisowski, and Noppon Saengkham. The action resumes tomorrow, Wednesday, 22nd January, as all seven players compete for a coveted spot in the Winners’ Group.
