World Champion Wilson secures Winners’ Group place with Group Three victory at BetVictor Championship League Invitational

Invitational January 9th, 2025

Kyren Wilson claimed victory in Group Three of the 2025 BetVictor Championship League Snooker Invitational, securing his place in the Winners’ Group after a tense battle in the final against Jak Jones. The reigning World Champion showcased his resilience throughout the group, ultimately overcoming his Welsh opponent in a dramatic showdown.

The final brought Wilson and Jones together once again, reigniting their rivalry from last year’s World Championship, where Wilson had eliminated Jones. The contest was tightly contested throughout, however, a crucial miss from Jones in the final frame gave Wilson the opportunity to lead ahead. A prolonged safety battle ensued as Jones attempted to regain control, but a failed snooker on the red ended his hopes, allowing Wilson to sweep up and secure his place in the Winners’ Group.

Mark Selby, the defending champion, dominated the group stages, going unbeaten across all matches and delivering the highest break of the tournament against Ronnie O’Sullivan before O’Sullivan’s withdrawal earlier in the day. Kyren Wilson followed closely in second place with four match wins out of five.

Ali Carter claimed third, edging Jak Jones on frame difference despite both securing the same number of match victories. In another close call, Chris Wakelin clinched the fifth spot to progress to Group Four, narrowly outperforming Robert Milkins by a single frame, resulting in Milkins’ elimination from the tournament.

Despite his stellar group stage performance, Selby faltered in the playoffs, falling to Jak Jones in a decisive 3-1 loss that marked Jones’ third Championship League Snooker Group final appearance this year. Meanwhile, Kyren Wilson held his nerve in a 3-2 thriller against Ali Carter to book his place in the final.

Selby and Jones will now join Matthew Selt, Stuart Bingham, Jim Robertson, Jackson Page, and Joe O’Connor in Group Four, continuing their campaigns in the 2025 BetVictor Championship League Snooker Invitational.
